Could Your Yellow Diamond Be More Valuable Than You Think?

As a GIA Graduate Gemologist and professional jewelry appraiser, one of my most important responsibilities is helping clients uncover the true value of their jewelry.
Recently, a client brought me a remarkable 3.53-carat diamond that had belonged to his late father. Years ago, the diamond was purchased from a swap meet dealer in Germany, but no documentation accompanied the stone. Without a grading report, there was no way to verify its color, clarity, or overall quality.
During my examination, I observed that the diamond possessed a noticeable yellow hue along with exceptionally high clarity. Because the color appeared stronger than a typical near-colorless diamond, I recommended that the stone be submitted to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for professional color grading.
Why is this important?
If GIA determines that the diamond qualifies as a Fancy Light Yellow diamond—or a higher fancy color grade—its desirability and resale potential could be significantly greater than if it were simply graded as a standard yellow-tinted diamond.
I coordinated the entire submission process for my client to ensure the diamond receives an independent evaluation from the world’s leading gemological laboratory. We expect the results in approximately two weeks, and we’re excited to learn the outcome.
Could Your Diamond Be Worth More?
Many people inherit diamonds or purchase them years ago without proper documentation. If your diamond has even a slight yellow tint, it may be worth having it evaluated by a GIA Graduate Gemologist. Professional grading can provide confidence, accurate identification, and in some cases, reveal a value that exceeds expectations.
If you own a diamond that you’re unsure about, I’d be happy to help you understand its true characteristics and discuss whether a GIA laboratory grading report is appropriate.
Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing the GIA results in just two weeks!
