As a GIA Graduate Gemologist, I begin by examining the diamonds and gemstones individually. We can identify the stones, evaluate their condition, take measurements, and determine which pieces may be appropriate for a new design.

This step can be particularly important when jewelry has been passed through several generations and the family does not know exactly what the pieces contain.

Sometimes there are surprises.

A stone assumed to be insignificant may turn out to be the most important piece in the collection. Conversely, not every stone needs to be incorporated into the new ring.

The design should begin with understanding the jewelry—not simply taking everything apart.

One of my favorite aspects of redesigning family jewelry is finding a way to respect its history without making the new piece look old-fashioned.
